Fourth of July
We Learned to Dance in the Rain

There is a famous quote that embodies yesterday's Fourth of July celebration in Dunwoody - "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass ... It's about learning to dance in the rain." Dunwoody Rotarians who turned out yesterday morning to be part of the city's annual parade or volunteers in the club's Dunwoody Festival hot dog stand can tell you just what that means. President Jack said the downpour started just as the floats were starting to move out of St. Patrick's parking lot. And who would think you'd step across the parking lot at Dunwoody Village to get a coffee at Starbucks and then wade back across to the hot dog stand after a 20-minute storm.

That said, the sun was shining when the float came into Dunwoody Village - still looking fabulous despite the rain. Thanks to the 15-20 people who showed up at Jack's house to assemble the float and enjoy each other's company on Saturday, and to all who braved the storm yesterday to walk in the parade or work the hot dog booth. Appreciation goes to:

  • Jack and Marcella for hosting the float decorating party on Saturday, and "dancing" with their kids in the parade
  • Kobelah and Ed - who have led our hot dog stand efforts for several years now - and their crew of new and regular hot dog stand volunteers - including grillers Russell Reams and Erich Schuetz, cashier Tina Philpott and more
  • Jennie Stipick and new member Alison Norris for chairing the float committee.

Is this the first time we've celebrated in the rain on the Fourth in the 30+ years we've been part of Dunwoody's celebration. NOT! When Lorri Christopher was President, all the pictures featured giant umbrellas and plastic raincoats - and we're sure there were other rainy years.
