The Day the World Stopped Turning: Honoring Manchester's First Responders

On September 11, the Manchester community gathered in solemn remembrance of a day that forever changed our nation. Through a symbolic stair climb, we honored the firefighters, police officers, and paramedics who made the ultimate sacrifice on that terrible day in September 2001—and those who continue to answer the call with courage and selflessness.

Participants included the Manchester Fire Department, Manchester Police Department, Meriwether County Fire Rescue, School Resource Officers, and students from Manchester High School, all standing shoulder to shoulder in unity, respect, and gratitude. Each step taken was a powerful reminder of lives lost, bravery shown, and a promise never to forget.

Rotarians Melissa Trujillo, Club President, and Jodi Sharpe and others offered refreshments and words of encouragement, providing comfort and support to those who climbed in honor of the fallen. Their presence reflected the Rotary spirit of Service Above Self and the deep appreciation our community holds for its first responders.

We also extend our thanks to Mary Byers of the Star-Mercury Vindicator for preserving this moment of remembrance and ensuring the story of Manchester’s tribute is shared.

With grateful hearts, we pause to remember.

We stand in awe of the courage displayed.
And we reaffirm our admiration and appreciation for the first responders who protect, serve, and sacrifice—then and now.

We will never forget.
